Question 1: How do you make the outfield more dynamic?

Dipoto has said that he wants an athletic team, especially in the outfield. The best options to consider are Brett Gardner and Jackie Bradley. Both of those pieces would need to be acquired via trade. Dipoto re-signed Franklin Gutierrez and said the plan right now is to platoon him in left field with Seth Smith. That is the case for the time being, but I’m guessing the M’s are looking for an everyday left fielder and use Gutierrez as the fourth outfielder.

Another name Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports mentioned, that is an interesting one to consider, is Jon Jay of the St. Louis Cardinals. Jay had an injury-plagued 2015, slashing just .210/.306/.257 in 79 games. He could be the center fielder, but is just signed through 2016. Dipoto likes guys who get on base, and Jay had an OBP of .372 in 2014, .351 in 2013 and .373 in 2012. He is only 30 years old as well. There are several dynamic options available in possible trade scenarios that shouldn’t cost the Mariners much.
