The Cardinals have lost two key members of their 2015 rotation. Lance Lynn is out due to Tommy John surgery and John Lackey is a free agent. Lynn was particularly brutal loss for the team as he was leaned upon heavily down the stretch. He will miss most if not all of the 2016 season. Lackey was pitching on a league minimum contract and will likely cash in this winter. He does not seem like a great fit to return to the Cardinals, but the loss of Lynn could force the front office’s hand.
Luckily for the Cardinals there are plenty of free agent pitchers this winter. The starting pitcher department is especially deep and the club will have many options when it comes to filling out their rotation. A huge signing for the club might be Jordan Zimmermann. He will be flying slightly under the radar with names like Zack Greinke, David Price and Johnny Cueto available.
Zimmermann could benefit from working alongside Adam Wainwright and could easily take his game to a whole new level. Zimmerman went 13-10 last season with a 3.66 ERA and a 1.205 WHIP. He has a career record of 70-50 with a 3.32 ERA and a 1.159 WHIP. The 29-year-old will be in high demand, but the Cardinals can provide what a lot of teams cannot — a winning team and a chance to work with one of the best catchers in the history of the game.
