Yes, Heyward is only 26 years old. Yes, he’s coming off a solid season with the St. Louis Cardinals. Yes, he’s one of the best defensive right fielders in baseball. Yes, he’s had to battle injuries multiple times and has seen his power numbers drop off.
I have no doubt that Jason Heyward will be a very productive player over the rest of his career, but is he worth a $200 million investment? Any team that invests that much money in Heyward has to hope he can harness the power potential in his 6’5″, 245-pound frame and push above 30 home runs. There isn’t much risk that Heyward will not turn out to be a valuable player, but how valuable remains to be seen.
