Mark CanhaOakland Athletics

The Athletics acquired the right-handed batting left fielder and corner infielder Mark Canha (the second overall selection of the 2014 Rule 5 Draft by the Colorado Rockies) by sending right-handed pitcher Austin House and cash considerations. The Rockies selected Canha from the Miami Marlins, where he played for the club’s Triple-A team in 2014. Canha had an impressive batting line there of .303/.38/.505. He also slugged 20 home runs and drove in 82 runs.

Canha has the ability to play first base, third base, and the outfield, and proved to be a great pickup for the A’s as he hit 16 home runs during his rookie year. He had a batting line of .254/.315/.426 and drove in 70 runs. Canha amassed a WAR rating of 1.1 during his first year in Oakland.

Canha has a decent swing from the right-handed side of the plate. The A’s found him very useful and utilized him at first base and in left field on many occasions. He had a very decent year and the A’s made out really well. Canha will surely make the team and he could develop even more power with a little luck. A nice pick up for the Athletics via the Colorado Rockies.
