8. Ben Zobrist
Prediction: Washington Nationals. Four years, $60 million.
Zobrist has turned out to be one of the most sought free agents this winter, and the versatile veteran makes sense, and has interest from almost all 30 teams. Sunday morning, Ken Rosenthal noted that a team’s willingness to give a fourth year could be the deciding factor for Zobrist. Thus, I think the Washington Nationals — who are set to lose Ian Desmond — will be the team to reel in Zobrist. Washington will find it important to keep him away from the rival Mets, and placing Zobrist at second could mean the Nationals could make Yunel Escobar available for trade to acquire bullpen help. Plus, we’ve seen in the past that GM Mike Rizzo and the Nationals will spend the money to win, and their window is closing soon.
