13. Will the even year trend continue for the Giants?
By now you know the story. Every other year the Giants win the World Series. They won in 2010, they won in 2012, and they won in 2014. With next season being 2016, the Giants are looking to keep the trend alive and win their fourth World Series title in seven seasons. To make that happen, the Giants have a lot of work to do at the meetings, even with the signing of Jeff Samardzija. The Giants could still be in the market for another starter, such as Mike Leake, and also could be in the market for some outfield upgrades, although it remains to be seen how much money they will be willing to spend. Regardless, the NL West is more competitive than ever, and the Giants won’t sit back and watch every other team in the West get better.
14. Will the Indians Trade One of their Young, Controllable Starters?
The question that has been circulating since as early as last season’s trade deadline. The Indians have made it abundantly clear that they are willing to listen on several of their young starters, specifically Carlos Carrasco and Danny Salazar. While not much progress has been made to this point, things may heat up with many of the top free agent pitchers off the market. The Indians will only trade one of their starters if the return is right, and it remains to be seen what team would be willing to meet those demands. What is clear is that those names will come up at the meetings, and plenty of action may occur on that front.
15. What surprise trades could we see?
The final most important storyline to watch for at this week’s Winter Meetings is the possibility of some surprise trades. Will Yasiel Puig be moved? Will the Yankees trade Andrew Miller or some other big contract such as Brett Gardner? Can the Padres unload James Shields, Matt Kemp or Melvin Upton? Will the Dodgers trade for a controllable starter? Will the Nationals shake up their bullpen with some trades? Will the Red Sox trade away any starters? Some of these questions may be answered this week. So far this has been one of the busiest and craziest Winter Meetings in recent memory, and it’s about to get a whole lot more entertaining. Enjoy it!
