8.) Jon Niese
Niese was traded in one of the more unheralded trades of the week for Neil Walker. He will leave a crowded New York Mets rotation and bullpen behind and head to Pittsburgh. With the Pirates, Niese should be assured of a starting job, something he would not have had in New York.
Last year, the 29-year-old left-hander was far from terrible. He had a 4.13 ERA in 29 starts and 176.2 total innings. Where can the Baltimore Orioles sign up for that? In light of the emergence of Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard, and Steven Matz, Niese became extremely expendable. Now, he gets to pitch for a team that has excelled at getting the most out of its starters. Ray Searage is nice like that. Just ask J.A. Happ.
