Classic Threads: San Francisco Giants

Early Days By the Bay: 1958-1972

As the Giants arrived on the West Coast, their uniforms kept in line with their look back in the east. Obviously, the “NY” hat and the “New York” uniforms had to go. A slight geographical tweak was more than adequate.

At home, the white uniforms kept the same distinct “Giants” script in black with an orange outline. The number on the back held the same color pattern.

The road grays, with “San Francisco” in an arched sans serif style looked sharp. I thought those were the best jerseys the Giants ever wore (more so during their flannel years). Much like the home jerseys, the back number was done in a black with orange outline.

The black hat with the orange “SF” and the orange button became the Giants new standard.

That black Giants alternate from the late 70’s was classic. They ought to wear those every once in a while, if they don’t already.
