Pittsburgh Pirates: Lightsabers
The Pirates finished last season with the second best record in all of baseball. The problem is that the team with the best record (Cardinals) was in the same division, forcing the Pirates into the one-game wild card playoff for the third consecutive season. They lost that game to the Cubs and their best year since 1991 was over in the blink of an eye.
After snapping a 20-year streak of consecutive years with a losing record, the Pirates have come within three games of winning the NL Central in each of the past three seasons. They have a very talented team featuring many young bats and a solid rotation. They just can’t seem to get over the hump.
Confession: I have never seen any of the Star Wars movies. But, in the spirit of the new Star Wars movie coming out this past week, I figured a good Christmas present for the Pirates would be lightsabers. Why, you ask? Well, if the Pirates can’t overtake the Cardinals and Cubs on the diamond, they must eliminate them some other way.
Stocking Stuffers: an even bigger helmet for Francisco Cervelli and a can of Rogaine for Andrew McCutchen because I miss his dreads.
