The Chicago Cubs have a need at starting pitching. They have a staff led by Jon Lester and Jake Arrieta. That is a great front of the rotation, but there are whispers the team is in search of another starting pitcher. John Lackey was signed this season to shore up the rotation. The veteran righty will eat innings and help in the chemistry area.
With the addition of Jason Heyward the Cubs are all in. They intend to win now and what better way to show that then by bringing in Jose Fernandez. With Heyward’s addition the Cubs have a crowded outfield and could move Jorge Soler or Kyle Schwarber in a potential deal for Fernandez. Add in Javier Baez and the Cubs have a great young trio of expendable talented players.
The Marlins would probably ask for Schwarber and Baez and still want more. The Cubs would need to add in some young pitching like Carl Edwards Jr. or Duane Underwood to get a deal done and it still would be tough for the Marlins to part with Fernandez. The Cubs would need to find some better young pitching to get a deal done. I would think the Marlins want at least one solid pitching prospect in return.
