The Astros could be an interesting choice for the Marlins, and in all reality a smart choice. The Marlins would prefer to send Fernandez to the other league so they don’t have to see him very much. The Astros could team Fernandez with Dallas Keuchel to form a powerful pitching duo. Keuchel is the reigning Cy Young award winner and Fernandez arguably has better stuff.
The Astros have plenty of young talent for the Marlins. Major league established players like George Springer and Lance McCullers would be very enticing to the Marlins. Springer would be tough, but would a package of McCullers and young prospect Daz Cameron get a deal done? The Astros are loaded with prospects and have A.J. Reed, Alex Bregman, Kyle Tucker and Tony Kemp in their farm system.
These two teams make sense on a deal, but the Astros seem to be focused on improving their staff through the free-agent market. Fernandez would not cost money now, but he would cost the team prospects. The Astros are full of prospects. In my eyes, there could be a deal if the Astros want there to be. It doesn’t appear they are interested, but you can be sure the Marlins hope they come calling.
