Colorado Rockies Top 20 Prospects

1) Brendan Rodgers – SS

Date of Birth: August 9th, 1996

Height/Weight: 6’0”/ 180 pounds

Bats/Throws: Right/Right

Acquired: Drafted in the 1st round (3rd overall) of the 2015 draft

At the top of the Rockies 2016 prospects list is the player just behind recently drafted Dansby Swanson in the 2015 shortstop class. Despite Swanson being taken #1 overall, and Alex Bregman being picked second, Brendan Rodgers was actually considered the number one overall player by several different outlets. Even with this number one ranking, Rogers fell to number three to the Colorado Rockies, who are happy to have him. At current, Rodgers is ranked in the top ten of all prospects in baseball. In his first half season with the Rockies organization, Rodgers slashed .273/.340/.420 in only 37 games. Rogers didn’t wow anyone in this small sample size, but the upside on him is tremendous.

At the plate, Rodgers generates a great deal of power for a middle infielder, and should also increase his strength as he develops further. Add that to his strong bat speed and his ability to hit to all fields, and Rodgers has all the makings of a polished overall hitter. In the field, Rodgers has good hands and decent enough range, to go along with decently above average speed, although some feel that he may be forced to transition from shortstop to third base as he ages. Comparisons to Chicago Cubs shortstop Addison Russell are no fluke, showing the potential of Rodgers at the big league level. Rodgers is clearly the most talented prospect in the Rockies minor league system, and will have every chance to succeed at the big league level now that Troy Tulowitzki has been traded.
