- The Padres will finally acquire a shortstop
This team has needed a shortstop for a long time. Not since Everth Cabrera have the Padres had a decent player at that position. Last year’s combination of Alexi Amarista, Clint Barmes, Jedd Gyorko and Will Middlebrooks was well below league average.
All are gone except for Amarista, and the Padres have still yet to acquire a serviceable shortstop. There are rumors about Ian Desmond, but the Padres aren’t looking to invest that much into a position player at short. They have three quality prospects at the position that should be ready by 2018. Javier Guerra, Ruddy Giron and Jose Rondon are all quality shortstop prospects, so the Friars probably are looking for a veteran on a one or two-year deal.
Alexi Amarista and Jimmy Rollins could be options, or perhaps the team can persuade Desmond to take a one or two-year deal. No matter what, the Padres are definitely going to acquire a shortstop soon. A.J Preller has already said that is the team’s number-one priority. Once a shortstop is acquired, expect the Padres to once again be active in the trade market.
