Seattle Mariners Top 20 Prospects

5.) Boog Powell – OF

Date of Birth: 1/14/93
Height/Weight: 5’10/185 pounds
Bats/Throws: Left/Left
Acquired: Trade with Tampa Bay in 2015

Boog Powell is one of very few players on this list whose main asset is their ability to plain hit the baseball. That however is the young outfielder Boog Powell, who presents a solid skill set highlighted by his high averages and OBP along with good speed. Unlike a lot of players on this list as well, Powell has already made AAA hitting .257/.360/.364 in 56 games with Durham last year as a member of the Rays organization. Powell has had to overcome some adversity, notably being traded twice and being suspended 50 games for use of an amphetamine.

Powell doesn’t have much power, but also doesn’t strike out very often and is very disciplined at the plate, drawing a good amount of walks. At the time of his acquisition, it looked as if Powell had a real shot to not only make the team but also to push for a starter job. Since then, the Mariners re-signed Franklin Gutierrez and also signed Nori Aoki and traded for Leonys Martin. This means Powell likely won’t make the team out of spring training but if (when) a Mariner outfielder (Gutierrez) gets hurt, Powell will likely be the first man up in the outfield.

Man that is just the cast with these minor league players. The absolute 5 star can not miss players continue to fall by the wayside.
How can you tell when a guy who does it all in AAA is going to be a flop?
