St. Louis Cardinals Top 20 Prospects

5) Marco Gonzales – LHP

Date of Birth: April 7, 1996
Height/Weight: 5′ 11″/160 lbs.

Bats/Throws: Left/Left
Acquired: Drafted in the 1st round (19th overall) in 2013

Despite brief stints with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2014 and 2015, we have yet to really see what Marco Gonzales is capable of. Gonzales struggled early in the year with injuries, and upon returning, couldn’t quite return to form at AAA. Gonzales will look to get back on track in 2016, but thanks to the signing of Mike Leake, Gonzales will likely start the year at AAA to further develop as a starter.

Gonzales isn’t an overpowering force on the mound, rather, he fools hitters with arm speed, precision, and a changeup with late break. Gonzales has the makings of a number-three starter and maybe even a two, but right now there are no openings in the Cardinals rotation.

Pretty good list. I disagree that Luke Weaver has ace potential. He has a wiry body that calls into question him being a workhorse. Also, serviceable is the highest praise he has gotten on his breaking pitch which bodes better for a mid rotation starter over an ace.
