Will the 2016 A’s be contenders, or builders?
Will this be a year of contention, or the beginning of a year of complete rebuild? Who is safe at the trade deadline. With a history of sending All-Stars to other teams, will even Sonny Gray be safe?
Over the past few years, Josh Donaldson, Addison Russell, Ben Zobrist, and others have been traded away, keeping the talent young and the farm system positive. This method has paid off in the past, but will this become another such year? The value of players like Sonny Gray can’t be underestimated, particularly at that trade deadline when playoffs are on the line.
With the division heavy schedule at the end of the season, it might be in the best interest of the A’s to hold onto their talent and ride the season out, but old habits are hard to break. Who will still be on the team after August, and, if deals are struck, will they pay off? Only time will tell.
