Josh Donaldson

Here’s an outside-the-box candidate to lead off for Toronto in 2016. There has been a bit of a shift in MLB groupthink, and big, power-hitting third basemen can now be viewed as an option for the top slot in a lineup. Manny Machado led off for nearly the entire 2015 season for the Baltimore Orioles. Getting your best player the most at-bats is never a bad idea, especially when there are plenty of other power threats in the middle of the order to drive Donaldson in if he leads off.

Donaldson leading off is probably a bit of a long shot. Keep in mind, though, that Donaldson was the team’s primary number-two hitter last year. One more bump up the order may not be totally out of the realm of possibility. At the end of the day, the Blue Jays have a modern-day Murder’s Row, and it does not really matter where Donaldson bats in the order. Whether he leads off or bats fifth, the MVP will get his chance to drive in plenty of runs.
