2016 Chicago Cubs Top 20 Prospects

Willson Contreras – Catcher – www.milb.com

10.) Carson Sands – Left Hand Pitcher

Date of Birth: 3/28/1995
Height/Weight: 6’3″/205
Bats/Throws: Left/Left
Acquired: Drafted 4th Round in 2014

Sands made tremendous strides in 2015 with his development on the mound. His strikeout to walk ratio was solid, and did not allow a single home run in 76.1 innings of work. With his big frame and ability to throw strikes, Sands could project as a back-end starter or reliever.

9.) Willson Contreras – Catcher

Date of Birth: 5/13/1992
Height/Weight: 6’1″/175
Bats/Throws: Right/Right
Acquired: Signed in 2009

Contreras is showing some sparks of brilliance going into 2016, doing well at the plate. He’s been in the Cubs organization for six years now and may reach Triple-A this season if he’s still progressing as nicely as he did in the second half of 2015.

A good backstop defensively, Contreras’ arm has shown signs of life when throwing to second or first base. But his arm is the only plus he has going for him right now, as he’s seemingly still working at the position. Unfortunately, Contreras, 23, is still a bit raw at the plate. He’s had a couple good at bats but has a long way to go before stepping into a major league batters box. He’s not a terrible batter by any means, but he’s an average hitter at best right now, if not somewhat clunky with his swing style. Contreras still has some very raw, unlocked potential, but for now he’s beginning to look like a back up at best.
