Five Major Questions for the Marlins in 2016

4. Who Drops Out of the Rotation?

The additions of veteran Edwin Jackson and Wei-Yin Chen to the Marlins rotation means that one or two of last year’s starters will have to be bumped out either to the bullpen or the minors.

David Phelps is the most likely candidate to get sent to the ‘pen. While Phelps has bounced around from the pen to the rotation throughout his career including with the Yankees, he has always performed better in the bullpen.

Phelps also struggled in his final few starts last year, giving up far to many home runs. He will more than likely switch back to a long-relief role.

I think Tom Koehler has a great chance to stay in the rotation simply because he eats innings which every team needs given the length of the season. Koehler will pitch more than 180 innings again in 2016.

Adam Conley is a top prospect and is highly touted with a lot of potential. Conley also pitched well in a September audition and should get strong consideration to join the big-league rotation full time.

Jarred Cosart has dealt with so many issues in his time with the Marlins, and I could see the Marlins not letting him start again. Given what the team gave up to get him, I think he will get another chance.

Someone has to leave, and it will be interesting to see how Mattingly sorts this issue out in the spring.

    Good questions!
I believe some answers should be more or less as follows:

    1. Ozuna will not hit 30 HR or get 30 SB. Hopefully, he will be closer to 2014 than to 2015. Yes, his 2015 demotion to AAA helped him play better in the second half.

    2. Jackson and Phelps are more unlikely to be part of the 2016 Marlins rotation than Conley, Cosart, and Koehler.

    3. Capps and Ramos should share the closer role during 2016. Alternating their opportunities will allow both to pitch better. However, the question for Mattingly will be how to use the rest of the bullpen when most of his SP will not get through the 6th. The Marlins will be lucky to get QS from others outside of Fernandez and Chen.
