What is Alex Cobb’s future?

Alex Cobb was supposed to take over as the ace of the staff going into the 2015 season. He had come off two seasons where he posted sub-3.00 ERA. He was also having an impressive spring before an injury derailed him.

It is almost one year later and Cobb has been mentioned frequently in trade discussions, most notably the Chicago Cubs as there is familiarity with manager Joe Maddon. Despite that intimate knowledge, it is unlikely any team will give the Rays the return they would want for him as he comes off a year-long recovery and several injuries in his past.

With him not slated to return until late into the 2016 season, it will just be a showcase setting up a trade after the 2016 season. An impressive last two months of the season will make Cobb more valuable to teams who are looking for pitching in a weak free agent class.
