Are there any takers for James Loney?

There has been a lot of speculation if the Rays can trade James Loney and his $8 million 2016 salary. Over the years, when healthy, Loney has been a solid contributor. But at 31, some have begun to question if he has become overpriced. Marc Topkin, of the Tampa Bay Times, has stated the Rays could be willing to take on some of that salary in order to facilitate a trade.

There are some options for the Rays if they could trade Loney. There is Richie Shaffer who was pressed into action at first base in order to get his power into the lineup. As of yet it is unknown if he can win the job. Additionally, Logan Morrison was acquired from Seattle and provides some power, but may not have the glove that Loney can provide.

As the free-agent market gets thinner at first base and spring battles are determined there may be an opportunity for the Rays to get what they want from a Loney trade. Salary relief.
