3. James McCann, Tigers
What’s a good article without an incredibly bold pick? James McCann was a rookie last year, and while his numbers weren’t mind-blowing, he showed signs that he could really emerge as a top-tier catcher in this league. Not unusual for a rookie catcher, he started out hot and cooled off a little towards the end of the season, but at the start of the year he was hitting .280/.320/430 before slipping at the back half of the year. Considering he’ll be in a lineup with J.D. Martinez, Justin Upton, Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez, the young catcher will get plenty of support around him.
The other big plus for the Arkansas product is that his defense is already elite. He only allowed three passed balls, and threw out 40-percent of runners that tried to steal on him. It’s bold, but there’s plenty of reason to believe that James McCann can be an elite catcher next year.
