Henderson Alvarez, Oakland Athletics
One Year, $4.25 million
This move could be a strikeout or home run. Alvarez was DFA’d by the Miami Marlins after this past season. In 2015, he struggled with a 6.45 ERA in 4 games before having to have shoulder surgery. In 2014, he had a 2.65 ERA in 30 starts and racked up a 12-7 record. A one-year is just the kind of deal the A’s love (no long-term commitment). Alvarez won’t be ready to start the season but will pitch at some point this summer. If he comes back and performs well, the A’s can either try to extend him beyond 2016 or trade him and get a prospect or two.
