Jeff Mathis has become noted over the last few years for being one of the best defensive catchers in baseball year in and year out. In his 642 game career, he has only 41 passed balls, an average of one every 15 games.

If defense were the only aspect of baseball, Mathis would go down as one of the better catchers in baseball history. The problem is that in baseball there’s this other thing called hitting, and it’s about as alien to Mathis as 90 MPH is to Jamie Moyer. His career high in batting average is .218 and his career high OBP is .288. The 10-year veteran has 42 career home runs, fewer than what Nelson Cruz and Chris Davis each had last season.
