First Base: Ryan Howard, Philadelphia Phillies
Not long ago, Ryan Howard was a great baseball player. He hit over 40 home runs in four straight years, including 58 in 2006. That same year, he was named National League MVP with his .313/.425/.689 slash line.
Up until 2011, he was not just one of the best first basemen in baseball, but one of the overall best players in baseball. Then injuries hit and the big fella missed the better part of 2012 and 2013, and when he was healthy, he couldn’t hit. He returned to play full seasons in 2014 and 2015, but now he’s just plain bad. The worst part is that the Phillies still owe him $48 million over the next two seasons.
