Bob Ferguson: Death to Flying Things
Bob Ferguson was one of the first people to play professional baseball, making his debut in 1871. This former infielder/outfielder/manager/umpire did it all, and was noted for his exceptional defensive play. Ferguson was one of the best fielders in the game during his 14 years as a pro, and because of that he earned himself one fantastic nickname.
Ferguson’s nickname has been co-opted for use with two other players: Jack Chapman, a contemporary of Ferguson in the 1870s; and Franklin Gutierrez, the snakebitten Seattle Mariners outfielder of recent years.
