One of the fun things about sportswriting is putting your neck on the line. The most likely reason to do that is, despite trying to be as unbiased and journalistic as possible, we’re also fans. We follow teams, and players. We care more about some outcomes than others, even if we fight the inner urge to report them unevenly. With the season upon us and Spring Training underway, I will stick my neck out and make some predictions for the coming year. I am absolutely certain that some folks will disagree, and I will follow up on this article later in the season. If you are right, and I am wrong, I will acknowledge it, but… if I am right, I may be a bit obnoxious. It’s been known to happen.
Not going to go with any of the obvious predictions either. Enough people believe the 2016 Cubs will, barring some interstellar disaster, win the National League Central. I believe that too – and I’ll add a bonus sixth prediction, it will be the Pirates, not the Cardinals, chasing most closely.
