The Pittsburgh Pirates announced on Thursday that the team will have a new look for Sunday home games.
Replica jerseys from 1979 will be worn for every Sunday home game during the 2016 season, excluding Opening Day. This builds upon a growing trend in Major League Baseball to honor past teams with Sunday throwbacks.
These uniforms will feature the old-style cap with three gold stripes, a v-neck jersey in bright gold, and black pants with two gold stripes down the side. These are the exact jerseys worn in game seven of the 1979 World Series, where the Pirates defeated the Baltimore Orioles to seal their fifth World Series championship.
Pirates fans will surely be reminded of the glory days of Willie Stargell, Grant Jackson, Dave Parker, and Bill Madlock when current stars Andrew McCutchen, Starling Marte, and Gerrit Cole take the field in the throwback threads.
Here is a sneak preview of All-Star Andrew McCutchen in the uniform:
The Pirates surely hope these uniforms can provide some good luck as they look to compete with the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs in a very difficult National League Central division.
