Dexter Fowler Signing With Chicago Cubs, Five Takeaways

3. Outfield defense improves

Arguably, the biggest question mark with the Cubs was going to be their outfield defense. Having Heyward play full-time center field for the first time in his career, Schwarber, a converted catcher play left field, and a raw, still developing Jorge Soler play right field had the makings of some outfield adventures over the long season. At the moment, it appears that Fowler will go back to center, Heyward will slide over to his familiar, Gold Glove slot in right, and Schwarber and Soler may platoon in left field.

Moving Coghlan helped to clear room for Fowler on the depth chart. With the near future set, barring  injuries or more trades, it will allow prospects Albert Almora, Matt Szczur, and Billy McKinney even more time to develop within the system. With Fowler and Heyward in more natural positions, the perceived outfield weakness is now in a much better alignment.
