Jose Berrios: When Will He Arrive?

Many Twins fans were clamoring for the young pitcher to be called up last year as the team was in the thick of a playoff race despite season-long pitching woes. Berrios, just 21 years old, has shot up the prospect rankings after two consecutive standout seasons in the minors. Last year Berrios led the minors in strikeouts with 175 whiffs in 166 1/3 innings between Double-A and Triple-A.

It is only a matter of time before the young Puerto Rican makes his major league debut; but the question is when? To date the Twins have treated their prized arm with kid gloves and they seem inclined to have him start the season in Triple-A Rochester. There has been rumblings in Twins camp that he may not be called up until after June 2, to avoid an extra year of arbitration as a Super-2 player. Should the Twins starters struggle out of the gate, the front office may have no choice but to bring up the talented right-hander earlier.
