Option 2: Steven Moya
The biggest upside candidate of the group is Moya. He has massive power and he’s shown it this spring, especially early on. Moya is 24, but his inconsistent swing and below average pitch recognition seem to make him a candidate for at least one more half year of seasoning with Triple-A Toledo. Moya also has some of the same handicaps as Tyler Collins would in being a Cameron Maybin replacement. He’s a lefty and at 6’7 there’s absolutely no way he could play center field. All of those things make Moya the least likely candidate despite his strong spring that included four home runs and a .346/.370/.808 slash line in 27 plate appearances.
Interestingly, Moya could be a strong trade candidate if the Tigers want to beef up their rotation that just lost Daniel Norris today, or Moya could provide power when the Tigers need to call upon him at some point during the year. Moya seems to be progressing, but there’s still worries and frankly he doesn’t seem like the right guy to replace Maybin.
