A lot has happened with the Indians since last time we spoke of them. They inked veteran outfielder Marlon Byrd to a minor league contract. They also announced that rookie outfielder Tyler Naquin will be their regular center fielder on Opening Day. Michael Brantley will indeed be put on the disabled list when Opening Day comes around so their starting outfield is becoming much clearer as the regular season nears.
Stud of the Week: Tyler Naquin
Yes it is a little lame to give this award to the same guy as last time but he’s earned it. Nobody expected Naquin to have this type of spring. This past week he has gone 7 for 13 at the plate and cranked three home runs in the process. He’s flashed power at the plate and a solid glove in center field. He’s come in and taken full advantage of the golden opportunity he was given when Abraham Almonte got slapped with an 80-game PED suspension.
Dud of the Week: Joba Chamberlain
It does feel a little unfair to be singling out a player who entered camp as a non-roster invitee and ended up making the Opening Day roster but that is exactly what is happening here. Despite cracking the roster he had a less than stellar week. He pitched only 1.1 innings in relief but walked three batters in the process. His poor command of his pitches may be something the Indians need to keep an eye on and be mindful of before they turn to him in late-game situations in the regular season.
