Kansas City Royals
The most noteworthy news item to report for the Royals is that left-handed reliever Tim Collins has to go under the knife again for his second Tommy John surgery in two years. It’s devastating for the pitcher as he was working his way back from Tommy John surgery this spring. Unfortunately his comeback has been delayed even further and will be out at least another year before he can make his way back to the mound.
Stud of the Week: Reymond Fuentes
The Royals have an open spot in the outfield with Jarrod Dyson being out for a while. Fuentes is the one who seems to have gotten the message loud and clear as he went 7 for 15 this week and hit a grand slam in the process. The Royals have taken note and will most likely utilize the young outfielder in a platoon role in right field with fellow outfielder Paulo Orlando.
Dud of the Week: Tony Cruz
It is probably unfair to be so hard on the backup for Salvador Perez. Perez is one of the best catchers in the game today and it is unreasonable to expect his backup to possess the same strengths that Perez does but here we are. Cruz tallied only one hit in 8 plate appearances this week though that one hit was a home run against the Oakland Athletics earlier today. Still Perez has logged a ton of playing time behind the dish, probably more than usual and that is most likely because of how valuable his presence is in the lineup. The Royals need to start reducing Perez’s playing time behind the dish now while they still can before the long-term effects of being a catcher begin to catch up with him. That requires Cruz to be able to show he is capable of sparing Perez.
