Five Stat Friday

5. Sacrifice Flies might seem like a meaningless statistic. And, maybe it is. But it is still a counted statistic, so I decided to see who was the best at getting that runner in from third with less than two outs. The answer? Eddie Murray, who recorded 128 sacrifice flies throughout his career. He barely edged out Cal Ripken Jr. for the record, who has 127 career sacrifice flies. Only seven players have at least 120 sacrifice flies in their career. All of them are in the HOF except for one, Ruben Sierra, who finished his career with 120 sacrifice flies. Sierra is in pretty good company in perhaps a not-so-important statistic, but runs matter and, in this case, sacrifice flies always lead to a run. (h/t baseball reference)
