Plan A: Didi Gregorius

It’s funny how fast a fan base’s opinion of a player can change from one season to the next. In 2015, Gregorius had the enormous responsibility of following in Derek Jeter’s footsteps. As a result, the slick-fielding shortstop struggled at the plate and produced some mind-boggling mishaps on the base paths. However, after some pep-talk from the Yankees’ core veterans, Gregorius turned his season around on both sides of the ball. You could say Gregorius is one of the most valuable position players on the Yankees roster, and certainly the best defensively. At age 26, Gregorius still has room to improve offensively but with a torrid start to this season already, he may surprise many fans yet with what he can do at the plate. Either way, Didi and Castro should provide a young and exciting double-play combination.

Plan B: Starlin Castro and Ronald Torreyes

Yes, Castro is set to start at second base, but if Didi goes down at any point during the season you can bet the Yankees will plug Starlin at his original position, allowing the Yankees to fill second base with either Dustin Ackley or Rob Refsnyder. If the Yankees choose to go a different route and keep Castro at second, they could use Torreyes at short instead.
