Imagining the Return of the Montreal Expos

Building Montreal’s Roster:

The important thing to remember when thinking of how to build this roster is that, as a new team, this Expos team would want young players who can be controlled but also experienced veterans. Also remember that following the 2018 season there is that huge free agent market that will feature Bryce Harper, Josh Donaldson, Matt Harvey, etc., so this expansion team would conceivably have a lot of money to throw around then so they may not take a lot of players to be tied to for a long time. So let’s get to drafting a team.

1. Javier Baez – infielder, ChC
2. Aaron Judge – OF, NYY
3. Ian Desmond – SS/OF, Tex

6. Henry Owens – SP, Bos
7. Henderson Alvarez – SP, Oak

With the way MLB is these days and teams packing in at least league-average talent, it’s no surprise that an expansion team would be able to nab more than a few key contributors. For example, this Expos team gets a lineup featuring breakout Tyler White, former mega-prospect Javier Baez, a reliable source of power in Brandon Moss, and then even a wild-card in Rusney Castillo. The pitching staff is also solid enough headed by R.A. Dickey, Scott Kazmir, and Jake Peavy, with young guys in Robbie Ray and Trevor May. Obviously, this isn’t an overwhelming roster and a lot would have to go right for this team to win a championship, but it could conceivably be better than some teams like the A’s, Braves, Reds, and maybe even Twins or Rays. The looming free agent bonanza would be huge, though, as this team also could free itself from some contracts by that time and would have money to throw around to launch itself into contention.

While this is all speculation, this was a fun scenario to imagine and with all the talk maybe Major League Baseball could go ahead with the expansion and the baseball community would actually get an expansion draft again.

You’d be crazy to think that the Cubs would be willing to let Javier Baez go like that. No way in hell they keep Ben Zobrist or John Lackey over him. Baez will be with the Cubs for years, while Zobrist and Lackey are both towards the end of their careers.
