The San Diego Padres are once again hovering around the NL West cellar, with an offense ranked 22nd in runs scored. Derek Norris was brought in two years ago with the knowledge that his skills behind the plate were not great, but with the optimism that the pop in his bat would make up for it. Last year his numbers were respectable and pretty much on pace for his career norms. This year has been a disaster.

He has no power so far, and cannot find the holes in the defense to save his life. Norris’s backup Christian Bethancourt has not been much better, making many ponder why top prospect Austin Hedges is still sitting in Triple A. Hegdes is not an offensive powerhouse, but is already an elite defensive catcher, which would upgrade over both Norris and Bethancourt.
