Kansas City Royals
It was not a week in which the Royals looked like defending champions. They dropped two out of three against the Washington Nationals at Kauffman Stadium, then went to Cleveland and dropped another series losing two out of three to the Indians. They had a losing record this week and have dropped to .500 for the first time since 2013. Their pitching wasn’t good and their offense sputtered at times. It was a very un-Royals-like week.
Stud of the Week: Eric Hosmer
The first baseman continues to do his business. He batted .333/.368/.556 on the week and represented the heart of the Royals offense. He also cranked another home run and tallied six RBIs for the week. The Royals are extremely lucky they have this guy, because if not for Hosmer, things could have been a lot worse this week.
Dud of the Week: Yordano Ventura
Ace? Not a chance. Ventura looked anything but the ace pitcher the Royals signed to a five-year, $23 million extension last year. He has battled control problems all through the early season and it showed again against the Indians on Friday, as he lasted just four innings before leaving after giving up six hits, five runs, five walks, and only three strikeouts. His control has been bad all year and it’s time he got things straightened out. He’s giving up too many free passes and getting charged for them.
