Kansas City Royals

Record: 3-4

Weekly Recap:

The Royals are continuing to underwhelm. Despite some impressive hitting at Yankee Stadium against the New York Yankees, their pitching wasn’t good enough and cost them dearly as they dropped three out of four against the Evil Empire. They then hosted the Atlanta Braves at home and won two out of three against the lowly Braves but had some more trouble as their usually unflappable closer Wade Davis finally broke and blew his first save of 2016 on Sunday by surrendering a two-run lead in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings. They ended up winning anyway, but seeing their closer bend and break was not a pleasant thing to see. To make matters worse, they send 2/5 of their starting pitching to the disabled list as Chris Young and Kris Medlen were shelved for at least two weeks.

Stud of the Week: Lorenzo Cain

After struggling for much of the early season, he finally woke up this week. He hit three home runs in one game against the Yankees at Yankee Stadium. That power eruption on the road seemed to help jumpstart his bat as he hit .389/.500/.889 with three home runs and seven RBIs. If the Royals want to turn things around, they need Cain to finally come to life and start tearing it up at the plate.

Dud of the Week: Chris Young

It was a bad week for the tall righty. He lasted only 2.2 innings against the Yankees as they knocked him around six hits, five earned runs, and five home runs. Let me repeat that. Five home runs in the same game. That ties a franchise record. He has relied on spin to deceive opposing batters and generate swings-and-misses, but he hasn’t done that very well this year. It could be the league is starting to finally figure his stuff out and if that’s the case, he’s in for a punishing season.
