Reds Trade Jay Bruce to the Indians
OF Jay Bruce
LHP Justus Sheffield
Why it’s good for the Indians:
Cleveland currently sits in first place in the AL Central, tied with the Royals. But if Cleveland wants to stay there, they will need to upgrade their lineup to support their pitching staff by the deadline. This deal gets them Bruce, whose contract is up at the end of the year but has tons of power and is major upgrade in the outfield and middle of the order for the Indians.
Why it’s good for the Reds:
The Reds will look to sell Bruce at the deadline as his contract expires at the season’s conclusion. In this deal, Bruce brings back two young prospects that can help Cincinnati as they continue the rebuilding process. Southpaw Sheffield is the Indians’ sixth-best prospect and is 9-4 with a 3.31 ERA in 2016, while shortstop Gonzalez is just 24 and has shown flashes of potential, hitting .255 with 69 RBIs so far in 2016.
Other Potential Deals: Athletics trade LHP Rich Hill to the Royals; Padres trade C Derek Norris to the Mariners; Angels trade RHP Huston Street to the Dodgers; Astros trade OF Carlos Gomez to the Royals; Athletics trade RHP Ryan Madson to the Nationals.
