White Sox Receive:
RHP Andrew Cashner
OF Matt Kemp
RHP Spencer Adams
Why it’s good for the White Sox:
Chicago would only pay around half of Kemp’s salary in this trade as the Padres try to cut his overpaid salary. Chicago gets Kemp – who had an excellent second half last season and could provide much-needed pop in the middle of the White Sox order – and most importantly Cashner, who would be an upgrade in the Chicago rotation. Cashner, 29, has a career 3.67 ERA. If the White Sox get San Diego to pay a big portion of Kemp’s salary, this is a trade that helps the Sox in two ways.
Why it’s good for the Padres:
San Diego is still recovering from the 2014-15 off-season when the Padres went all-in and it didn’t quite work out. The Padres here are able to get rid of a part of Kemp’s salary, which is on the books until 2020, and that’s a positive even if they have to pay half. Cashner is being shopped and is a valuable piece, but it’s necessary to include him so the Padres can bring in Spencer Adams, a promising right hander who is Chicago’s third-best prospect and should be a valuable rotation piece for years to come.
