Ten MLB Trade Deadline Ideas

Padres Trade James Shields to the Cardinals

Cardinals Receive:

RHP James Shields

Padres Receive:

RHP Luke Weaver

SS Juan Herrera

Why it’s good for the Cardinals:

The Cardinals are currently one game over .500 and one of their main issues has been their rotation struggles. Ace Adam Wainwright has a 5.71 ERA, Michael Wacha’s ERA is 5.04, and the lowest ERA in the St. Louis’ rotation is Mike Leake’s 3.90 ERA. Shields, who currently holds a 4.28 ERA that was 3.06 ERA before he allowed 10 runs in 2.2 innings yesterday, would be an upgrade for the Cardinals rotation. His contract doesn’t look so bad anymore after the large contracts to starters recently, and Shields isn’t a free agent until 2019. The Cardinals only have to give up two mid-level prospects, and this deal to upgrade their pitching staff makes sense on a number of levels.

Why it’s good for the Padres:

San Diego knows it has to push the restart button after the disaster that was 2015 and get some young prospects in exchange for their talented veterans. There have been rumors flying about a Shields trade, and not only does this return free San Diego from his big contract, but GM A.J. Preller also hauls in two talents in the process. Weaver is a very talented young right-hander who is currently 8-5 with a 1.62 ERA in Triple-A. Herrera is also a talented slugging shortstop who is just 22 years old and hitting .265 in Triple-A.

Rangers wish they could get Lucroy for that little. No way Milwaukee accepts that deal. All these deals are gross underpayments except for a select few. That Sonny Gray package is laughable aside from JDL. Please don’t do another article like this until you can get a grasp on the trade market.

    Won’t happen.
Why its a dumb idea (besides them saying it won’t happen) – They don’t need any prospects as they have a great farm system. What they need is major league stars and ready players and Teharan is one already with a long contract.

    Lucroy won’ happen
Rangers have 2 backup catchers that are currently hitting better than Lucroy, doing a fine job. And Chirinos who is recovering will be ready shortly.
