Is anyone able to defeat Jake Arrieta? If you follow the Chicago Cubs, after Arrieta’s start Tuesday night, you may be aware that one streak did come to an end. After 23 straight starts in which Arrieta took the ball, the Cubs ended those games with a victory. Against the Los Angeles Dodgers Tuesday night, the outcome was a bit different.
While Arrieta did not factor into the decision, his personal winning streak remains intact. On the season, Arrieta is 9-0 with two no decisions. He narrowly missed out on being just the third pitcher ever to reach 10-0 before June 1.
Arrieta’s last defeat came at the hands of a no-hitter by Cole Hamels. When Arrieta is on his game, that appears to be the only way to take down the bearded one. While Scott Kazmir was certainly up to the task of taking down the reigning Cy Young winner allowing just one hit, it only resulted in a no-decision for both starters.
The question is, when Arrieta is dealing, who just might be able to stop him? Here are five possibilities of who might be able to stand toe-to-toe with the Chicago Cubs ace, and get the best of him on a given night.
