With a little more than a week to the MLB Trade Deadline, the rumors are going to start gaining steam. In regards to the Phillies, that statement is particularly true. As I alluded to in a previous post (here), I believe that the Phillies should be sellers in the days leading up to August 1. Since their red-hot start to the season, the Phillies have fallen back to Earth — hard. They’ve dropped from 0.5 games back in the NL East on May 22, to 12.5 games back as of today. Additionally, they’re eight games back of the Miami Marlins and St.Louis Cardinals, who are tied for the National League’s final wild card spot. Unlike previous years, the Phillies are not obligated to become buyers or sellers at the deadline. However, it seems to be in the organization’s best interest to rid themselves of some veterans that are blocking the path of some minor-league talents such as J.P. Crawford, Nick Williams, Jake Thompson, and others.
That being said, today we’re going to take a look at five possible trade ideas for the Phillies. In doing this, I took into consideration a team’s level of competitiveness, the needs of certain teams, and the depth & overall talent of a team’s farm system.
