Kansas City Royals
They began last week by getting swept by the Blue Jays at the Rogers Centre, then traveled to Safeco Field to take on the Seattle Mariners and ended up splitting a four-game series. They then opened the second half by losing a three-game series to the Tigers thanks to some late-inning bullpen collapses. If any team can start a hot streak, it is the defending World Champs, but their clock is starting to run out. If they want to mount a comeback the time is now. They have been reportedly interested in going after the Oakland Athletics trade chips such as lefty Rich Hill and left fielder Josh Reddick, but it remains unclear if they can actually pull it off due to a barren farm system.
Stud of the Week: Danny Duffy
2 GS, 2-0, 4.26 ERA, 12.2 IP, 13 H, 6 R/ER, 1 HR, 2 BB, 14 SO
With all the questions in the rotation this season, the young lefty has been a nice boost. He’s been consistent in practically every outing and has shown pinpoint control, something that plagued him earlier in his career. For the Royals to keep their postseason hopes alive, they need Duffy to keep going and lift the rotation.
Dud of the Week: Chris Young
1 GS, 2 G, 0-1, 16.20 ERA, 3.1 IP, 7 H, 6 R/ER, 4 HR, 6 SO, 2.100 WHIP
He continues to be a mixed bag of results for the Royals. He’s usually able to pitch well at Kaufmann Stadium, but often gets his butt handed to him on the road. The inconsistency has to be frustrating for the Royals, who handed Young a two-year, $11.5 million deal in the offseason and are not getting what they paid for at all.
