As a high-school-level baseball coach, I am always scouring the internet for new ideas and opinions on anything from drills to nutritional plans I can work into my coaching philosophy. The internet is an endless hub of resources for coaches at any level, but one of the best things that I have come across to date is the “Year Round Throwing Manual” by Alan Jaeger, the founder of Jaeger Sports.
There is little more important to the success of a baseball player than the care and development of his arm, considering that the throwing arm is often a player’s main asset. Alan Jaeger founded Jaeger Sports on the basis that athletes need to develop both their physical and mental skills in order to be successful in game situations. Since 1991, Alan has worked with over 200 professional players, including 2002 American League Cy Young Award winner Barry Zito, as well as Dan Haren and Andrew Bailey.
The “Year Round Throwing Manual” was born as a result of 25 years of experience, and presents the question to all athletes: “What’s in your arm, and what is it capable of doing?” In the Manual, you will discover that Alan and his team of experts use a new-school approach to the development and care of the arm. Contrary to the popular belief that one only has so many throws in his arm, Alan and his team believe the athlete actually “builds” throws in their arm by throwing more, based on simple theory that the arm responds to activity rather than inactivity.
I’m sure at this point, you are saying something along the lines of, “Well, there’s no way that throwing all year can be a good for the arm.” The concept behind the “Year Round Throwing Manual” is broken down into four periods throughout the year: Off Season, In Season, Summer Months, and Rest Periods. These periods allow for the player to have adequate rest from pitching activities, ensuring the prevention of arm fatigue through specifically designed throwing exercises.
The “Year Round Throwing Manual” is highly regarded by many Division 1 college baseball programs, and for good reason. The manual provides coaches and players with a structured, year-round plan that not only strengthens the arm but also prevents injury to the arm.
For Coaches/Players that are serious about their throwing program and the investment of building their arm, what a great place to refer to! This Year Round Throwing Manual spells it all out with a clear map and a plan from both the technical and structural points so that it can be used at any time to guide a player to a healthy arm, year round! This manual should be a staple on the shelf. — Scott Brown, Pitching Coach, Vanderbilt University
Jaeger Sports has long been at the forefront of what it takes to develop elite throwers — this Year Round Throwing Manual is a direct reflection of their passion, knowledge and diligence — it is truly outstanding. – Matt Hobbs, Pitching Coach, Wake Forest University
Jaeger Sports and the J Bands have always been a big part of our program. Their insight on how to prepare an arm and how to maintain an arm is exceptional. All of our pitchers follow the band program daily and it has really helped our pitcher’s performance. – John Savage, Head Coach, UCLA Baseball, 2013 National Champions
If you’re a baseball coach, player, or even a parent looking to see an increase in arm strength while not sacrificing the long term health of the arm, then the Jaeger Sports “Year Round Throwing Manual” is an investment worth making.
The “Year Round Throwing Manual” is the most complete arm care and development plan that I have come across to date, I am genuinely looking forward to delving further into the manual and implementing the instruction into my coaching repertoire this coming offseason.
